Dumb MIDI Controller

The Dumb Controller is a MIDI controller used for converting control voltages to MIDI messages and vice versa. MIDI controllers are devices used to interface the real world to music applications on computers through the computer's MIDI interface. Midi controllers can be used to for interactive installations for electronic art / electronic music, often known as experimental music. Ms

Control Voltage to MIDI Conversion

The device has thirty-two inputs (sixteen 0 to +5 Volt scalable control voltage analog inputs and sixteen digital inputs), which can be used by a performer to generate MIDI control messages to one of two MIDI outputs--depending upon the configuration of the device and the state of these inputs. This is a standard feature of classic MIDI controllers

MIDI to Control Voltage Conversion

The device also has four (can be upgraded up to eight) scalable 0 to 10V analogue outputs, and eight 0 to 5V digital outputs. These outputs are controlled by inputting a MIDI control messages (say from a MIDI keyboard, sequencer, or other MIDI device), and if the controller is configured to respond to the message, the controller will alter the output voltage depending upon the message. This makes it possible to control up to sixteen low current (30 mA) analogue devices (like an analogue synthesizer, relays, or lighting controllers) using a MIDI keyboard, MIDI sequencer, or any other MIDI generating device. Additionally, the device has a merge feature that will merge incoming MIDI messages with those generated by the controller on MIDI output port 1. The MIDI controller is powered by a 12VAC 1 Amp power supply.

CV to Open Sound Control Conversion

The Dumb Controller can be upgraded to perform Control Voltage to Open Sound Control conversion and vice versa. This has been made possible due to a generous grant from the Australia Council.

Artists

Artist using the Dumb Controller include Hannah Clemen, Donna Hewitt, Lynne Sanderson George Khut Squelch Multimedia Sarah Waterson Timothy Opie and Gordon Monro.

Scalable

Unlike many other similar hardware devices, the Dumb Controller can be later upgraded to include Open Sound Control capability, or even upgraded to a Smart Controller. Also, the Dumb Controller can be obtained as a kit so you can do it yourself (DIY) without having to manufacture your own circuit boards.
